Every indoor cat wants the same three things from a window spot: sunlight, a view, and something stable to land on. How you deliver that depends far more on your window than on your cat.
The three mounting styles
Suction cup hammocks
Attach directly to the glass, so they work on almost any window and can sit at any height. Best for smooth, untinted glass. They need occasional re-seating and a clean surface. Great when your sill is too narrow to hold anything.
Hook-mounted perches
Hang from the window frame slot — no suction, no drilling. Very stable and completely weather-independent. Requires a frame slot at least half an inch deep.
Sill-resting perches
Sit on the windowsill with adjustable supports. The sturdiest option for big cats or multi-cat homes, and the easiest to install. Needs a reasonably deep sill.
Match it to your cat
- Under 15 lbs, single cat: a suction hammock is usually plenty, and the cheapest way to give them the view.
- Large breed (Maine Coon, Ragdoll): go for a metal frame with a stated capacity above 40 lbs, or a sill perch.
- Two cats who share: a wide sill perch — hammocks are single-occupancy in practice.
- Senior or arthritic cat: an orthopedic bolster perch mounted low, so there's no jump.
What actually makes them use it
Placement beats product. Cats pick spots that are warm in the afternoon, offer a view of movement (birds, a street, a garden), and feel secure from behind. A perfect hammock in a dim north-facing window will be ignored; a basic one in the sunny window becomes their whole personality.
Give it a week before judging. Rubbing a little catnip on the fabric or placing a familiar blanket on it speeds up adoption considerably.
Washability is not a small detail
Fur, dander and the occasional hairball all end up here. A removable, machine-washable cover is the difference between a bed that lasts years and one that gets thrown out in three months.
